History and Overview

In 1940s, as the first school of humanities and social sciences founded in Shanghai, School of Liberal Arts in Tongji University gathered a batch of scholars of humanities and social sciences with considerable domestic and international influence, such as Guo Shaoyu (郭绍虞dean of the Department of Chinese), Xiong Wei (熊伟dean of the Department of Philosophy), Chen Quan (陈铨dean of the Department of German), Wu Ping (dean of the Department of History), etc. Also, famous professors including Zhang Shizhao (章士钊), Zheng Shoulin (郑寿麟), Yang Yizhi (杨一之), Chen Kang (陈康), Feng Qi (冯契), Feng Zhi (冯至) and Liao Fuxiang (廖馥香) all taught at the School of Liberal Arts. In August 1949, the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Law were combined into the School of Humanities and Law, which was later incorporated into Fudan University, and made great contributions to the construction of humanities disciplines of Fudan University. Since then, it had been a long-cherished dream of the people of Tongji University at home and abroad to re-establish its humanities disciplines. In January 1993, Tongji University re-established the School of Humanities and Law, based on which the School of Humanities and the School of Law and Politics were re-structured in July 2006, with a fully new self-consciousness and educational orientation which we would like to describe as “contemporary and international liberal education of creativity.”
