I、Brief Introduction

  Although Tongji University is good at science and engineering, it has a long tradition of humanities. During the May 4th movement, Tongji people's literary creation and academic discussion had been quite influential. Weishizhen and Zongbaihua, who were students of Tongji at that time, were the main contributors of the youth monthly. In 1946, the Department of Chinese literature was established, bringing together a large number of influential humanities scholars at home and abroad, such as guoshaoyu, Chenquan, Fengzhi and xuzhongyu. Since the re establishment of the Department in 2000, there have been a number of well-known scholars and writers, such as Ma Yuan, zhudake, wanghongsheng, zhuhengfu, yudaxiang, Qian Hong, etc., which can be described as a gathering of handsome people. In 2011, it was approved as a master's degree awarding point in Chinese language and literature.  

The first-class master program of Chinese language and literature is now recruiting and cultivating students in accordance with the following five major directions.

  The first is literature and art. It has formed discipline characteristics in the fields of literary theory and critical methods, and the comparison of Chinese and Western aesthetics. Currently, it has instructors such as professor zhangyongsheng and Professor Zhang Nian.

The second is comparative literature and world literature. It has its own characteristics in the fields of comparative literature theory and the study of the relationship between Chinese and Western literature, and now has instructors such as professor zhujingyu and Professor Yejun.

The third is Chinese modern and contemporary literature. It has formed an important disciplinary influence in the fields of Chinese modern and contemporary literary trends, Lu Xun studies, cultural criticism, etc., and now has instructors such as Professor Zhang Hong and Professor Zhang Pingjin.

The fourth is ancient Chinese literature. It focuses on classical poetics and ancient narrative literature, and now has instructors such as Professor Liu Qiang and Professor zhuchongzhi.

The fifth is Chinese philology. Focusing on the history of Chinese and exegesis, it now has associate professors Deng Jun and Xu Yuan as its instructors.  

This discipline covers five secondary disciplines: literature and art, comparative literature and world literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, ancient Chinese literature, and Chinese philology, with a complete range of literary languages. In particular, it has unique characteristics in the fields of theoretical research of comparative literature, comparative research of Chinese and Western aesthetics, research of garden and drama aesthetics, research of Lu Xun and urban literature, "world theory" research, unearthed documents and so on.  

  This discipline confers a master of Arts degree.

II、Objectives

Cultivate high-level innovative talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, art and labor, and become social pillars and professional elites leading the future.

1.have a firm and correct political direction, love the socialist motherland and support the leadership of the Communist Party of China; Have the dedication of serving the people and working hard for the prosperity and strength of the motherland; Abide by laws and regulations, and have noble moral character.

2.master solid basic theories and systematic professional knowledge; Have the ability to engage in scientific research or independently undertake specialized technical work; Have the basic ability to use foreign languages to carry out academic research and academic exchanges; Good cooperation, organization and leadership skills.

3.actively promote the connotative development of the school's graduate education with the main line of "building morality, cultivating people, serving needs, improving quality and pursuing excellence" and the focus of "curriculum, ideology and politics", and take the cultivation of high-level innovative talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, art and labor as the guidance. Strengthen the training of master and master students and implement the integrated design of training program; Make overall arrangements and link up the curriculum systems at different levels, fully reflect the basic, cutting-edge, cross cutting and systematic curriculum system, and actively create conditions to promote the cultivation of cross compound talents. Learn from the training experience of high-level universities at home and abroad, highlight teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, and strengthen the cultivation of Postgraduates' knowledge innovation ability and practical innovation ability.

IV、Program Duration

  The duration of schooling is 2.5years with a maximum of no more than 4 years.

V、Credit

Academic graduate students should complete at least 31 credits, including 6 credits for public degree courses, 12 credits for professional degree courses, 8 credits for non-degree courses (including at least 1 inter-college or interdisciplinary course with 2 credits), and 5 credits for compulsory courses.

VI、Dissertation

  Graduate students should complete their theses independently under the supervision of their tutors. The thesis should demonstrate that the graduate students have fully met the requirements stipulated in the "training objective". In principle, theses should be written in Chinese, but overseas students may write theses in English or other languages approved in advance by the Degree Evaluation Subcommittee and Graduate School, but they must attach to their theses detailed Chinese abstracts.

  Thesis Topic Selection: The discussion of the master theses topic selection should be organized by each discipline according to the time required by the university, usually no later than the third semester. Students who fail to pass the first report may re-select the topic after 3 months. If the student fails to pass gain, this will be regarded as an automatic termination of study and the student will be dropped out. In the course of the research, if there are significant changes in the thesis topic , the topic selection meeting shall be reorganized.

  Mid-term assessment: The mid-term assessment of the master graduate students should be organized by each discipline according to the time required by the university. The mid-term assessment of master graduate students with a 2.5-year schooling system should be completed no later than the third semester after admission; the mid-term assessment of master graduate students with a 3-year schooling system should be completed no later than the fourth semester. Students who fail to pass the mid-term assessment for the first time may be reexamined six months later. Students who fail to pass the re-examination again shall be dismissed from school.

  Blind trial: it should be conducted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the university and its colleges.

  Review and Oral defense: For the form and writing requirements, the organization and process of the thesis’s review and deferred oral defense, please refer to the Regulations on the Granting of Degrees of Tongji University、Specifications on paper Topic Selection and Review and Oral Defense of Tongji University .

  Confidential theses: Confidential management of secret-related thesis and applications for the academic degrees shall be carried out in accordance with the Regulations on the Management of Confidential Graduate Students and Confidential Thesis of Tongji University (No. 65, Tongji Graduate School, 2018).

VII、Research Papers

  Students enrolled in this MA program are not required to publish their academic achievements. However, they are encouraged to submit their papers to formal journals, postgraduate academic periodical and forums hosted by universities at home and abroad.

VIII、Dismissal Policy

  If students fail to pass more than three (including three) courses during the period of study, they shall be dismissed from school.

  Students who fail to pass the topic selection or the mid-term assessment twice shall be regarded as automatically terminating their studies and shall be dismissed from school.

  Students who fail to pass the mid-term assessment within schooling shall be dismissed from school.

IX、Remark

  Courses are generally arranged in the first to 1.5 academic years. In the compulsory links, graduate students' academic behavior norms, topic selection and Tongji advanced lectures must be completed before the mid-term assessment.

  There should be at least a 2-month interval between the topic selection and the mid-term assessment and a 6-month interval between the mid-term assessment and the thesis defense.

  Tongji Advanced Lectures is high-level academic lectures organized by the Graduate School and colleges. Graduate students should attend no less than 16 academic lectures listed in the management of Tongji Advanced Lectures before the mid-term assessment, and put their reflection into the management information system for graduate students.
